Defining documentary theatre

3/4/2020

As my presentation came together, it became hard to define. Because it is a survivor's story, but it became much more than letting a doctor know that I was still alive. Then, I realized that I had actually written a production. There is an Act 1, 2, & 3 with separate themes that contributed to an overall thematic arch. My theatre, t.v., and film experience is informing this venture. But it wasn't the full definition. This is not fictitious. "The events depicted here are based on a true story." As I was storyboarding I asked, "So what is this?" It ends up combining the two very people involved, my audience and myself. A theatre of facts.
My mom sent me the physical journals that she used to document every update from a provider - the good and the bad. To know that these very pieces of paper were in the room during my various diagnoses brought a tangible connection to the past. Now we have a basis..."a tangible connection to the past." A documentary...maybe? Documentary theatre...maybe? Let's look it up.
No definition!!!!! What? Now you know you are on the right path.
